Apple Day is a celebration aimed at a region's terroir (terr-WAH), the special set of characteristics created by a region's weather, geology, geography, soil, and other natural conditions. Because of the wide diversity of apples and the way individual apple types are dependent upon terroir, they've come to be the center of this festivity.
Celebrate your own Apple Day by visiting a local orchard or your own apple trees, if you have any. Drink apple cider, bake an apple pie or cake, or stir up a batch of applesauce. If you have children, show them how to bob for apples. Cut an apple in half around its equator, allowing the pentagram hidden inside to show. Lay one half at the base of an apple tree, offering blessings of thanks. Eat the other half next to the tree while you ground, center, and feel the connection to your own terroir. |
