Today is the Hindu festival Maha Shivaratri, celebrating the god Shiva. Shiva is the master of meditation and is known to meditate high in the Himalayan mountains for years at a time. Because of this he is often referred to as the "King of All Yogis."
If you are having trouble developing a regular meditation practice, or you simply want to strengthen your existing meditation skills, today is the perfect day to pray to Lord Shiva and petition his assistance. Sit in a comfortable position and visualize Shiva while reciting this simple mantra to him: "Om namah Shivaya!" Repeat the mantra 108 times (a sacred number in Hinduism). You may wish to use a prayer mala to keep track of your recitations. Allow yourself to enter a meditative state as you repetitively recite the prayer mantra and become more focused. When finished, bow in oblation of gratitude. |
