| The Kitchen God lives behind the stove. He sees and hears everything that happens in the household. On the first Monday in December, he ascends to heaven and reports on the family's activities. A good report will bring luck; a negative one, misfortune. On the night of the Kitchen God's departure, thank him for his presence during the previous year by giving him a farewell offering of sweet cake. Burn sandalwood incense, write your wishes for the family on red paper, then light the paper in the flame of a red candle. As the smoke from the wishes travels upward, repeat the following prayer five times: "Ascend to heaven and speak of good things. Send blessings down to the world below." |
