Today begins a week-long celebration in Mexico honoring departed loved ones. The first of these days is called Angelitos, or "little angels," Day, as it honors children who have passed on. These holidays are not sad ones in Mexico—rather, the holidays are designed to remember departed loved ones and to welcome their spirits into the home. Some Mexicans make a path from the cemetery to their homes with hard candies indted guide the Angelitos home. At home there are calvera, or skeleton, decorations and pictures of the children, toys, and traditional refreshments. Tonight the jimaninos, or spirits of children who do not realize that they have passed on, also come out, and Mexican Witches may call them in during a ritual. These spirits are said to be playful and not dangerous, and they will dissipate on their own after November 2, the Mexican day of the dead. |
