Today the celebrations of our beloved dead continue! Today is All Souls Day in Catholic traditions, and the day also holds celebrations of the Mexican Dia de los Muertos! I invite you to join me in a favorite activity of mine for this day: cemetery visits. Many traditional celebrations involve honoring your own relatives, and you certainly may visit their graves if they are nearby; however, many of us do not live near the graves of our relatives. In this case, visiting local cemeteries still honors the spirits of those who came before you where you live, ancestors of the land, if you will.
I like to stroll the graveyard, clean off any obscured stones or toppled decorations, and leave offerings about the grounds, especially at the gates. Tobacco, apples, and corn make nice offerings. Honoring those different from you also shows respect for diversity to those beyond the veil. |
