As seasons change and wild winds whip the cold toward us, invoke the Great Mother Kali Ma with an incantation. We chant the names of her four arms, which represent the four elements (earth, water, fire, wind-La, Va, Ra, Ya) and the complete cycle of creation and destruction. And we call her name: Kali, from the Sanskrit kal, meaning "time." Her right hands are held in the mudras that represent "fear not" and offering. Her left hands hold a bloody sword and a severed head, representing the destruction of ignorance and the dawning of knowledge. Chant to invoke Kali in all of her ferocity and tenderness:
"La, Va, Ra, Ya ... Kali Ma La, Va, Ra, Ya ... Kali Ma La, Va, Ra, Ya ... Kali Ma" As you chant, know that you are intimately engaged in the eternal cycle of birth, life, death, and compost- creation and destruction. Just like Kali Ma. |
