Today is the Dragon Boat Festival, a Chinese celebration during which revelers race dragon boats and participate in rituals designed to protect their health. Common wisdom says that the festival honors the life of a historical figure (although the exact figure can vary by region), but there is evidence that its true origin was to honor the Dragon King of the region, or the Dragon Kings of the seas. Dragon Kings-ancient Chinese nature deities-symbolize powerful masculine energy, while also ruling the oceans and waters of the world. So, like the summer solstice, they embody the potency and balance of both poles: yang and yin, fire and water, the sun and moon. Today, throw a sunstone into a natural body of water as an offering to the Dragon King, a petition for health and inner equilibrium, and an expression of your appreciation for the waters of the world. |
