Onions ripen in late summer to autumn, depending on the variety and location. This vegetable is associated with protection and purification. Onions represent eternal life according to Egyptian tradition.
You can protect your home by making an onion braid. You need at least six onions complete with their tops. (If you don't grow your own, sometimes you can find whole onions with tops at a farmers' market or natural food store.) Double up a piece of twine and knot a loop in the middle for hanging. Use this to support the onions as you braid them together, adding one onion at a time. Concentrate on protection as you work. When the braid is done, you can attach protective charms to the twine, such as the Eye of Horus or scarab beetle from Egypt, cornicello from Italy, ahimsa hand from Jainism, or the Wiccan pentacle. |
