Today is Ancestry Day in Haiti. Traditionally it is a day to honor one's human ancestors.
However, our line of ancestry runs much farther! While we aren't descended from apes, we all share a common ancestor, the first primate. And we stem from a long line of mammals, reptiles, assorted aquatic beings, all the way back to the beginning of life. This makes every living being our extended family. We really are connected to every other being on this planet, and this is a great day to celebrate that. Instead of just putting out an altar for human ancestors, why not create one for a whole array of them? Obviously you can't include every single individual, and not even every species directly preceding humans, but you can create a general setting for them all. |
