This is National Trails Day. America has many miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. Some trails cross several states, such as the famous Appalachian Trail. Other countries have their own trail systems. Trail activities offer benefits such as exercise and enjoying outdoor scenery. Use a recreation map to identify trails near your home or distant ones you'd like to visit. Today is a good day to learn walking meditation. Not all meditation has to involve sitting motionless and thinking of nothing! Choose a quiet, safe trail to walk. Dress comfortably and carry water. As you walk, set aside the everyday worries and chatter filling your head. Let your mind drift a little. If intrusive thoughts return, acknowledge them and gently push them away. Rest your eyes on the blue sky, the flowers and trees, and any animals you might pass. Relax. This, too, is meditation.
