Charles Dickens's classic tale A Christmas Carol is a favorite of the season. The three spirits who visit Ebenezer Scrooge are relevant to our lives now as well. What we put out comes back at least three times. In this season, where the idea of plenty is in sharp contrast to the paucity of those less fortunate, it is our responsibility to answer to the spirits of the season. To answer the Ghost of Christmas Past, contact someone with whom you lost touch over the years. It could be an old friend, a relative, or a former teacher. Send them a card or letter, with photographs, to catch up on missed time. If it is someone with whom you have quarreled, try to work it out and make a fresh start. To answer the Ghost of Christmas Present, take a bag or basket of food to your local food bank, so that those without will be assured a good meal during this holiday season. Volunteer for a few hours if you can. Bake a plum pudding for your friends, hiding a coin inside for luck (be sure to warn them, so no one breaks a tooth). Bake cookies, and take them in to work. Offer to shop for a sick or elderly neighbor. To answer the Ghost of Christmas Future, make a contribution to a children's charity. Better yet, find a way to volunteer some time over the next few months. Our children are the future. May the joy of the season be upon you.
