In winter, hearth fires give light, heat, and cheer. Offerings are often tossed into hearth fires. Traditionally, rune spells involved carving the relevant runes on wood and burning it. So, winter is a good time for rune spells. First, choose three runes representing your desire, such as Gebo (luck), Wunyo (success), and Jera (growth) for a household blessing. Next, split a stick lengthwise and carve the runes into the flat face of the wood. Use red paint or ink to color each rune. While concentrating on its particular power, name each rune aloud. Then throw the stick into the fire. (If you don't have a fireplace or woodstove, you can make a small fire in a heatproof cauldron or other container in the kitchen or living room where a hearth would usually be.) Finally, make a blot or offering to the gods; those associated with runes prefer mead or ale.
