A Compost Spell

At the end of the growing season, garden plants are pulled up or cut down. The earth is tilled under for the winter.
Now is a good time to apply compost, giving it time to break down prior to spring planting. You can spread the compost pile from the garden, gathered during summer.
You can buy compost. In autumn, it's actually acceptable to spread fresh manure. In fact, that often costs less than finished compost, and it will decompose enough to be safe by the time planting season rolls around.
Most magic is aimed at growth, but compost magic focuses instead on decay, as a part of the natural cycle. As you spread the compost, recite this charm to help it work:

"All that dies
Comes apart, breaks down,
Loses self,
Turns from green to brown,
Goes to earth,
Becomes dirt and food,
Lies in wait
For spring's new green brood."
