If you can't get your child to hold still and talk to you, go to the kitchen and begin a project that occupies your hands-like decorating holiday cookies. When your child comes to the kitchen, whisper: "If it be the Lady's (or Lord's) will, talk to me, come set a spell. Ears to hear and lips to speak, some time with you is all I seek." Then invite your child to help with the project. As she works, match the rhythm of your breathing to hers, then gradually slow it down so she will unconsciously match you. When you are both relaxed, ask a simple question such as what kind of nose she'd like on the snowman cookies. Gradually you may turn to more thoughtful questions: "What is your favorite part of the holidays?" or "How do you feel when you give someone a present?" And behold: Quality time with your child. |
