The ice fairies painting on your windows and glittering in the trees are beautiful, but they are also the fairies that freeze your car door shut and leave a thin sheet of ice on your walkway. The ice fairies don't inconvenience you out of malice. They are merely the elemental spirits of winter doing what comes naturally and supporting nature in its wintery sleep.
This incantation can be spoken to honor the winter fairies and to invoke their protection as you travel into the weather: "Fairy friends, I'm sure of foot upon the ice, As I admire your handiwork of beauty. Fairy friends, I'm sure of tires as off I drive, I honor thee, faeries of winter duty. By winter flame, freezing water, sleeping earth, and cold winds blow. I shall be safe, I shall be sound upon the ice and winter snow." |
